Reminds me of a quote from CS Lewis' book, Surprised by Joy:

"The very nature of Joy makes nonsense of our common distinction between having and wanting."

Kevin:

I have the view that all of my time left in life at this point is devoted to looking and moving forward.

"It's never too late to be what you might have been."

Two phrases come to mind Kevin.

(1) Life is what happens to you when you're making other plans; and

(2) Most humans live inconsequential lives.

We're both in a business (and thus an environment) where we regularly encounter highly motivated people, who feel that they have some degree of control over the direction their lives take. Unfortunately, most people do not really fit that mold.

Our job is to convince them otherwise.

Why folks let others and circumstances define them and their potential is amazing to me Kevin.

In our culture, we expend so much time and effort to please specific others for "emotional" and "small circle" purposes, that it frequently detracts from our ability to contribute to the benefit of society-at-large and humankind.

Imagine where we'd be if everything thought of their contribution as benefiting as many others as possible, a la Mother Teresa.

One of my favorite phrases from literature has always been, "Above all, to thine own self be true."

I often suggest to people that they delude themselves for pragmatic or functional reasons, but that eliminating the delusion or denial ensures a greater probability of success.

I wrote a blog post (No. 94) in mid-March entitled, "Rarely Does a Man Love His True Self," shortly after hearing that phrase for the first time. I've thought about it alot since then. The phrase was initially troubling to me. Then after thinking about it further, I realized that it is a good state of mind not to always love one's true self, since then you are able to improve on your life and interaction with others.

As you know Kevin, I have a little different slant on things. I call myself the Logistician because I like to focus on getting things done. I also feel that there are lots of things that we can learn from the physical universe/physics to assist us in understanding humans.

I think that humans thrive on occupying their time with some activity which they consider to be of value. I also think that humans like to feel that what they're doing today will yield some positive returns down the road. We need to ensure that we occupy the time of our youth with more meaningful activities, which instill in them the value of thinking of the greater good, and less on their personal issues.

For example, giving a juvenile offender a younger juvenile offender charge for whom he is responsible, significantly reduces the incident of recidivism. I also believe that more programs focusing on innovation and technology are the way to go.

Glad to see that you are still trying to have an impact out there.
